January 2012

January was a great month for us this year. Aubrey Grace turned two years old and we had a blast celebrating her all month long.

When she woke up on her birthday she had a surprise waiting for her upstairs. I had decorated her play area with new doll furniture - a high chair, an armoire, and a baby bath. I fixed her dolls and her other presents and decorated the area with a dozen balloons - plus one giant Dora balloon. She had to walk through a barrier of streamers to get to her presents which was a little confusing for her but fun nonetheless. She loved all her new toys but most of all she loved her balloons. After a bit of play time we got dressed and headed to Bitsy's house. Bitsy had gotten a pretty pink retro kitchen set from Pottery Barn Kids and filled it with all sorts of goodies. The refrigerator was fully stocked, as was the stovetop. She had pots and pans, a cutting board with fake food that actually separates in the middle. Everything was set up just so and Aubrey had to go through another doorway of streamers and balloons to get to her toys. She thought all of this was great fun. After some more playtime, followed by cake, we headed to the Dallas Zoo. This was the first time Aubrey has been to the zoo and she loved it. She enjoyed watching the monkeys play, petting the goats, and seeing the gorillas. We made the mistake of going when the zoo opened at 10 and a lot of the animals still were not awake. We were still able to see most of the animals we were interested in and Aubrey even got to feed the giraffes. After the zoo we headed to her favorite restaraunt - Glorias, where she proceeded to eat her weight in black bean dip. After an event packed morning we headed home for a nap.

Part two of Aubrey's birthday celebration came the following week. I had taken Wed-Friday off and on Wednesday Aubrey, myself, and Bitsy headed to the cottage we rent at Cedar Creek Lake for a few days. We had decided that as much as Aubrey loves the lake and the animals it would be the perfect way to wrap up her birthday celebration. We went for walks, played games, made Valentines Day cards and read books. Aubrey played with all the animals but made a special friend in the black kitty that lives around the Cottage. On Friday Justin joined us for the weekend. We played in the sand, dug shells out of the lake, and watched the sunset. Aubrey experienced her first campfire and loved the process of roasting marshmallows. The time off was relaxing for all of us and provided a much needed break from the city. Aubrey had a blast as usual and we are counting down the days until we can return.

Aubrey's 2 year old check-up went great. She is 36 inches tall and weighed 28 pounds. She is doing fabulous on her words and her counting, and excels in her mobility skills. Dr. Kennedy was impressed that she is playing soccer and dancing around the way she does. We don't have to see Dr. Kennedy again for a year, which is awesome but sad at the same time. As much as it will be nice not to have to go I always love hearing all the positive things she says about Aubrey.

So far 2012 is off to a great start!
